Are You Up For A Challenge? Provide 131,579 meals for Charlotte’s Hungry this Winter!
Are you up for a challenge? Lori and Eric Sklut are challenging the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community to provide 131,579 meals for the hungry this winter. For every dollar donated to Loaves & Fishes through January 31, 2017, the Skluts will match dollar for dollar up to $25,000, potentially generating $50,000 for Charlotte’s hungry.
“The winter months are especially difficult for families who are living so close to the edge – no one should have to choose between heat or medicine for a sick child and feeding their family.” says Loaves & Fishes Executive Director Tina Postel. “Turning $25,000 into $50,000 would mean that we can provide enough groceries for over 131,000 meals. This generous match from the Skluts will double the impact of a donation to Loaves & Fishes and will fill twice as many empty stomachs this winter which is critical as over half of our clients are children.”
“I can’t imagine not being able to provide a meal for my children. Hopefully, if we meet this match, many fewer of our neighbors in need will be faced with such a heartbreaking situation.” – Tina Postel, Loaves & Fishes Executive Director
Loaves & Fishes expects to feed 7,000 people in the month of December alone, half of which are children.
Families and individuals in Mecklenburg County continue to struggle to meet their basic food needs. A recent survey of Loaves & Fishes clients showed there has been no significant improvement in food insecurity in Mecklenburg County in the last year. 93% of respondents say they often or sometimes worry about food running out or have had food run out (91.5%). These numbers show no significant improvement over 2015.
Adds Postel, “$50,000 would go a long way in providing not only meals but also hope for thousands of hungry families in our community this winter.”
